ABOUT

Alex Taylor is a trombonist, sousaphonist, composer/arranger and educator based in Adelaide, Australia. Alex freelances throughout the Adelaide music scene in various jazz, blues, rock, and folk bands, through to big bands, cabaret shows and pops orchestras, as well as leading his own creative projects. In 2017, Alex was a semi-finalist in the Australian National Jazz Awards, and in 2019 released his debut album Sleep Faster through Wizard Tone Records

Alex regularly performs with The Shaolin Afronauts, Thomas Voss Big Band, Atlantic Street Band, and additional performance highlights include Performance highlights include playing with The Australian National Jazz Orchestra (2021) The Cat Empire, and Midnight Oil, as well as accompanying artists including Tim Minchin, Tina Arena, Em Rusciano, and many others. 

As a composer/arranger, Alex has been commissioned to compose test pieces for big band competitions including ABODA-SA Bands Festival (2013, 2016, 2024) and the SA Schools Jazz Festival (2020). Alex has also served as an adjudicator for the ABODA stage band division (2013, 2024) and in the small ensemble division at Generations in Jazz (2023). His composition Play Crazy For Me was on the shortlist of options in the 2020 National Youth Music Arranging Competition, and Alex was a contributing composer for the 2021 COMA/Nexus Arts Exquisite Corpse project.

Alex has lectured in the jazz department at the Elder Conservatorium of Music since 2013, teaching trombone, brass masterclass, improvisation, and small and large ensembles. Many of Alex's students have achieved recognition for their playing at local, national, and international levels.
